Generator Tents for Running Open Frame Portable Generators

Open frame portable generators must operate outdoors to reduce carbon monoxide risk, but severe weather can make safe operation difficult. GenTent® engineered generator tents allow portable generators to run safely in rain, snow, and high winds while protecting electrical components and maintaining proper airflow.

Portable Generator Cover Performance Ratings

Every GenTent on the market is independently lab tested and rated for:

  • Up to 110 MPH forecast winds
  • Hurricane-force precipitation (18" per hour)
  • 20" wet snow load (65 lbs)
  • Flame-retardant canopy and components (NFPA 701)
  • Waterproof dual-coated vinyl with rip-stop reinforcement and welded seams

Universal Clamp System for Open Frame Generators

The GenTent Universal Clamp mounting system is designed to fit most open frame portable generators using exposed vertical frame posts. This adaptable clamp design attaches to round or square frame tubing and can accommodate partially blocked frames, muffler shields, or generator panels that might prevent traditional mounting methods.

Two GenTent kits are available for open frame generators depending on overall frame size:

  • Universal Clamp Kit Designed for most portable generators with frame perimeters between 76″ and 104″. The Universal Clamp system attaches directly to generator frame posts and adapts to round, square, or partially obstructed frames.
  • XL Universal Clamp Kit Built for larger open frame generators with perimeters between 105″ and 128″. The XL Universal system extends coverage for high-output portable generators and whole-home backup units.

Why Use a Generator Running Cover?

Portable generators often need to operate during storms, power outages, or severe weather events. Because generators must run outdoors to reduce carbon monoxide risk, protecting the unit from rain, snow, and wind becomes essential. A properly engineered running cover helps protect sensitive electrical components while maintaining safe ventilation and access to controls.

Unlike tarps or temporary shelters, GenTent running covers are specifically engineered for operating generators during storms. Each canopy is made from marine-grade waterproof vinyl with reinforced seams and rip-stop construction designed to shed rain and snow while maintaining safe cooling airflow around the generator.

GenTent systems are independently lab tested and built with flame-retardant canopy materials meeting NFPA-701 standards, allowing generators to remain protected while running outdoors during severe weather events.

  • Weather protection: Waterproof vinyl canopies shed rain, snow, and debris while protecting generator outlets, control panels, and electrical components.
  • Severe weather performance: GenTent generator tents are independently lab tested and rated to withstand extreme weather including heavy rainfall, strong winds, and significant snow loads during generator operation.
  • Engineered airflow: The patented frame structure preserves natural generator cooling airflow so the generator can operate safely while covered.
  • Portable installation: The Universal Clamp system mounts directly to generator frame posts without drilling or permanent modifications, allowing the cover to move with your generator.
  • Made in the USA: GenTent generator tents are assembled in the United States using globally sourced materials to maintain consistent quality and performance standards.
