About GenTent Safety Canopies
GenTent Safety Canopies is the company behind the original portable generator tent and running cover. Founded in New Hampshire in 2011, GenTent created a new product category to solve one of the most common problems homeowners face during outages: how to safely operate a portable generator outdoors when rain, snow, wind, and severe weather are part of the emergency.
Portable generators are essential backup power tools, but they must be operated outdoors and away from homes, garages, sheds, windows, doors, and vents because of carbon monoxide risk. GenTent was created to help make that safer outdoor operation more practical by protecting the generator from weather while preserving ventilation, exhaust clearance, portability, and access to the generator controls.
Born From a Real Power Outage Problem
The GenTent product line launched in March 2012 after founder and inventor Mark Carpenter recognized an overlooked safety gap in portable generator ownership. People needed backup power most during storms, but wet weather made generator operation more difficult, more stressful, and more hazardous when users improvised with tarps, plywood, pop-up shelters, garages, or other solutions not designed for running generators.
GenTent answered that problem with a patented, self-attaching canopy system engineered specifically for portable generator operation. Instead of covering a generator like a storage cover, a GenTent running cover is designed to protect key electrical areas from precipitation while allowing the generator to breathe, cool, exhaust, and remain portable.
Granite State Innovation,
Built on Common Sense
“An idea is an invitation to take action” is one of the core principles that guides inventor Mark Carpenter and the GenTent team. GenTent is the result of accepting that invitation when portable generator owners needed a safer, more practical way to use backup power outdoors in severe weather.
The GenTent team’s relentless pursuit of excellence has earned thousands of 5-star customer reviews, industry-leading performance test results, 1st in Show at the National Hardware Show, and multiple patents.
Our belief system is built on common sense, customer focus, American innovation, and integrity. Reviews, storm stories, and real-world customer experiences are an important part of that mission, showing how GenTent generator running covers help protect portable generators while supporting safer outdoor operation.
